Six years ago, I never could have imagined the twists and turns that my life was about to take. An achy back turned into 2 years of physical therapy, stabbing pain down both of my legs, which turned into back surgery at the age of 19, and continued on with 3 more years of physical therapy. These back pains caused other symptoms of numbness in my arms and legs, excruciating headaches, and even a Multiple Sclerosis scare. There were days I had to ask my mom to drive me to school because of the pain and walking around the block seemed like an unimaginable trek to China. My quality of life was burning thin because of the limitations caused by my chronic back pain.
When I was 22, I started CrossFit with Adam. At that point, I had no idea what I was physically capable of. I only knew the lifting techniques that I had learned in previous years which contributed to my miserable back pains. I was very hesitant at first, but Adam took the time to explain each small step and every body movement to help improve my overall strength. After time, I was able to see, for myself, that not only did my body feel better, but I was able to relearn everyday movements such as loading the dishwasher, which, for me, ultimately diminished my back pain.
There were days when I would come in from a workout by myself, flabbergasted that I was able to deadlift 90 pounds safely and alone. I could not believe that my back felt BETTER after the workout than before. Post back surgery, a doctor once told me that there were two things that I should never do: snowmobile and …deadlift. I truly believe learning the correct way to deadlift has changed the course of my back pain.
I am so fortunate to have found CrossFit and to have a coach who cares about his members’ quality of life. I have finally discovered that there are other ways to help cure my chronic back pain, other than hundreds hours of physical therapy and doctors appointments. I have not been back to a doctor since I started CrossFit and I cannot believe how much this experience has changed my life! I feel so proud when telling people how much my quality of life has improved since starting CrossFit. I would tell my story a million times over so that others can see the true value in CrossFit.
